I feel as though this Instagram profile really resonates with what I have learned about photography this week. This profile has a freeing quality to it. The artist posts whatever she desires;she seemingly does not care about how others perceive her. Her content displays her true identity, which is what photography is all about. Photography helps showcase someone’s personality to others. This profile clearly demonstrates that the person behind it is a creative who is not afraid of being herself on social media, which parallels greatly with the work of Vivian Maier. Overall, her posts hold a majestic quality, as a result of her innate individuality.
It’s really interesting that you see her photos in that light because I think that’s most likely what she intends. I would push you, however, to also reverse those ideas. Keep in mind all of the photos she’s taken and decided NOT to post, all of the choices she’s made when creating images about what to include in the frame and what to leave out. I don’t know if a “true identity” can ever be fully represented through photographs. In fact, it might be informative to try thinking about her work as if she is only presenting a FALSE identity. How would that change the way you understand her work? One of the most important points I think anyone can communicate about photography is the fact that it’s never simple and it’s never only one thing.
